Biography

Miguel A. Mañanas
Miquel Angel Mañanas received his Telecommunications Engineering and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering degrees from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1993 and 1999, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Automatic Control (ESAII) at the same university. He also belongs to the Biomedical Signal and Systems Division of the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) at UPC.

He is a member of the Spanish Committee of Automatics (CEA), the Spanish Biomedical Engineering Society (SEIB) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Teaching

He teaches subjects on Automatics and Systems Engineering at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (ETSEIB). Courses are related to Control Theory, Continuous Time Systems and Digital Control, as well as Signal Analysis. Currently, he is the Director of Post-Graduate Program “Technologies of Industrial Control and Scada” of the CIM Foundation. He also teaches a course on Biomedical Signals in the Master on Biomedical Engineering (UPC and Universitat de Barcelona).

Biography

Joan Francesc

Joan F. Alonso was born in Ripoll in 1979. He received the Telecommunication Engineer Degree from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2002 and the Master in Bioengineering Degree from the same university in 2004.

He worked as a research assistant from 2004 to 2007 at the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB), and as a researcher from 2008 to 2009 at the Biomedical Research Networking Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN) of the Carlos III Health Institute.

In 2011 he obtained his PhD degree on Biomedical Engineering from the UPC, and at present he works as a Serra Húnter Lecturer at the Automatic Control Department (ESAII). His research interests include the analisys of the interactions between biological signals and systems, with application to myographic (EMG and MMG) and encephalographic (EEG and MEG) signals.

Teaching

He has taught subjects on Automatics, Control and Industrial Informatics at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (ETSEIB), the School of Engineering of Vilanova i la Geltrú (EPSEVG), the Faculty of Nautical Studies of Barcelona and the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE).

Currently, he teaches Programming, Biomedical Signal Processing and Biomedical Image Processing at the EEBE.

Biography

Monica

Mónica Rojas Martínez is a researcher at the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and at the Biomedical Research Networking Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN) of the Carlos III Health Institute.

She graduated in 1999 as Electrical Engineer from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. Currently, she is also a Ph.D. candidate at the UPC with her dissertation topic focused in the protocol design and analysis of EMG signals as tools in the diagnostic and rehabilitation therapies of the upper limbs.

Biography

Sergio

Sergio Romero received his Industrial Engineering Degree in Automatic speciality from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2000, and his PhD degree on Biomedical Engineering from UPC in 2010.

He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Nautical School of Barcelona (FNB) and at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (ETSEIB) of the UPC. He develops his activity in the Automatic Control Department (ESAII).

He is member of the Biomedical Signals and Systems Division of the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) of the UPC.

Teaching

He teaches subjects on Automatics and Systems Engineering at the FNB. Teaching is related to Control Theory in Continuous-Time Systems and in Discrete Systems in the Naval Engineering Field. He also teaches in the Postgraduate Program of “Industrial Control Technologies and Scada” in the CIM Foundation .

Biography

Foto_Leidy_Serna

Leidy Yanet Serna was born in Medellín (Antioquia, Colombia) in June 1984. She has a Degree in Bioengineering (2009) from the University of Antioquia (UdeA) and currently she is a post-doctoral researcher at the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) of UPCUniversitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

She is member of the research group in bio-signal analysis for rehabilitation and therapy (BIOART) at the and a part-time associate professor at the same university. Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) of the UPC and also of the Bioelectronics and Clinical Engineering Research Group (GIBIC) of the UdeA. Her expertise includes modelling physiological systems, creating algorithms and computational systems for analysing physiological signals, designing computational tools to train healthcare professionals, and developing e-learning software. She has worked extensively with respiratory and cardiovascular systems, assisted mechanical ventilation, cardiorespiratory, muscular, and brain signals. Her professional interests and activities include research and innovation in signal processing, predictive modelling, and machine learning techniques for assisting clinical diagnosis and human-machine interfaces.

Biography

Marateb

Hamid R. Marateb (Ph.D.) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. He received his Ph.D. and post-doctoral fellowship from the Laboratory of Engineering of Neuromuscular Systems, Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, in 2011 and 2012, respectively. He was a visiting researcher at Stanford University in 2009 and Aalborg University in 2010. He was a visiting professor in UPC, Barcelona, in 2012 and 2016-2017. He received the Marie Curie fellowship in 2015. His research interests include intramuscular and surface electromyography, medical data mining, biomedical signal processing, and the design of electronic systems. He is currently an associate professor in the biomedical engineering department, faculty of engineering, the University of Isfahan, IRAN, and also a senior researcher in the Department of Automatic Control, Biomedical Engineering Research Center, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC). He is also the head of the machine learning Department of the Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Institute, a WHO-collaborating center. He is a reviewer in many international journals and the editorial board of Frontiers in Cognitive Neuroscience, Frontiers in Integrative Physiology, Basic and Clinical Neurosciences, and Journal of Medical Signals and Sensors. He is the Founder of ANNT (Arman Negaran Novin Teb) and also the Co-founder of ZAPE (Zist Abzar Pars) companies in Iran.

Biography

Marjan Mansourian

Marjan Mansourian (Ph.D.) is currently affiliated to the BIOART research group (UPC) with the Marie Curie fellowship and the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Department, Faculty of Health, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (Iran) as the associate professor and also the data-analysis department of Isfahan Cardiovascular research center, a WHO-collaborating center. She received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Isfahan and Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran, in 2003 and 2007, respectively. She received her Ph.D. in Biostatistics from Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran, in 2004. Her research interests include longitudinal data mining/modeling and experimental design. She authored numerous publications in indexed journals in the field of data modeling and medical data mining. She is the Co-founder of the biomedical data mining company ANNT (Arman Negaran Novin Teb) company in Iran.

Biography

Joaquim Chaler

Joaquim Chaler has a PhD in Medicine from Barcelona University (Spain). He is the chief rehabilitation doctor of the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the insurance company Ergasat-Suma (Terrassa, Spain). His field of expertise is rehabilitation and the analysis of patients with muscular injury. He has worked extensively in the development of the Biomechhanics laboratory and on many muscular tests in Egarsat-Suma. He is also a reader of the dean of the Department of Ciencies of Physical Activity and Sports of the Ramon Llull University (Barcelona, Spain) as well as the Medicine School of Sports of the Barcelona University. Recently he has collaborated with the laboratory of evaluation of muscular force of the Barcelona Football Club. His areas of expertise in investigation include musculoskeletal disorders related to work and sports, muscular weakness and movement analysis.

Biography

Alejandro

Alejandro Bachiller received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Telecomunations Engineering and Ph. D. in Biomedical Engineering from University of Valladolid (UVa) in 2011, 2012 and 2017 respectively. Between 2011 and 2017 he belonged to Biomedical Research Group (GIB) from University of Valladolid. He is currently a member of the Biomedical Signals and Systems Division of the Biomedical Engineering Research Center (CREB) of the UPC. In addition, Alejandro is an Assistant Professor at the Nautical School of Barcelona (FNB) of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). He develops his activity in the Automatic Control Department (ESAII). His main research interest include biomedical signal processing focused on pathologic and physiologic brain signals, the analysis of brain dynamics in terms of connectivity patterns, the localization of brain sources and the evaluation of brain networks.

Mehdi Shirzadi

Mehdi Shirzadi (Ph.D. candidate) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Islamic Azad University Of Najafabad and University of Isfahan, Iran, in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate for Biomedical Engineering in UPC - UPC Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. His research interests include intramuscular and surface electromyography, deep learning, data mining, and biomedical signal processing.

Biography

Roger
Roger Esteban-Vives (Ph.D) got his bachelor's in molecular biology at the University Autonoma of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain) in 2001. He worked as a molecular biologist in Genetic Modified Organisms until he joined the private company Oryzon Genomics (Barcelona, Spain) where worked developing a new technology to induce and detect mutations in organisms via a high-throughput molecular detection system. From this work, he received, in 2010, his Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the University of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain). Dr. Esteban-Vives joined, in 2010, the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, USA), as a Research Associate. Dr. Esteban-Vives's scientific research included studies of the epidermal and dermal stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and their role as an off-the-shelf, allogeneic cell source combined with cell-spray technology for potential large third-degree burn therapies. However, Dr. Esteban-Vives later focused on developing and improving clinical protocols for epidermal-dermal skin cell isolation, characterization, and differentiation to treat deep partial burn wound patients. In 2016 Dr. Esteban-Vives joined a startup company focused on wound healing regeneration as Vice-President of Research and Product Development, responsible for the cell biology research area and the medical device development.In 2022 Dr. Esteban-Vives joined Bioart group as an Innovation Manager to accelerate the commercialization process of the group's technology.

Gema2

Gema Mijancos Martínez (PhD Candidate) received, in 2020, her Biomedical Engineer Degree from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In 2022, she obtained an M.Sc in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation from the UPC, the Universitat Autònoma de Catalunya (UAB), and the Institut Guttmann. Currently, she is working on PhD research focused on the identification of biomarkers to characterise the cortical inhibition alteration present in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder by processing TMS-EEG signals. Her research interests include mental health, biomedical signal processing, event-related potentials, brain connectivity and brain stimulation, among other related topics.

Marta

Marta Borràs (PhD. candidate) received the B.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the M. Sc. degree in Computational Biomedical Engineering from the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in 2018 and 2020 respectively. She is currently working on PhD research based on hybrid EEG/EMG biomarkers from neurological signals to monitor motor activity. Her areas of interest include biomedical signal processing, EEG and EMG, event-related potentials (ERPs), motor-related activity, brain connectivity, among others.

Elena

Elena Condominas (Ph.D. candidate) has a degree in biomedical engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), and a M.Sc degree in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation is taught by the UPC, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Guttmann Institute. She is currently working on Ph.D. research on EEG biomarkers to predict cognitive recovery. Her areas of interest include biomedical signal processing, event-related potentials, brain connectivity, and brain networks.

Sara Fernández

Sara Fernandez (PhD candidate) graduated from Rutgers University (New Jersey, USA) in 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. She then obtained her Master’s degree in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Institut Guttmann in 2023. She is currently a PhD student at the UPC, where her research focuses on the modelling of the cardiorespiratory system and mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. Her main research interests include the modeling of physiological systems, biomedical signal processing, and predictive modeling for assistance with clinical diagnosis.

Gerard Izquierdo

Gerard Izquierdo Antó (research support technician) received his B.Sc. degree in biomedical engineering and an M.Sc. in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). Currently, he is working on different projects, preparing neurocognitive tasks to enable EEG synchronization with the stimulus of interest. His research interests include biomedical signal processing, brain connectivity, brain-computer interfaces, and stimulus presentation and synchronization.

Biography

Saul Jose Ruiz

Saúl J. Ruiz-Gómez received his bachelor’s degree in Specific Telecommunication Technologies Engineering from the University of Valladolid (UVa) in 2014, his master’s degree in Telecommunication Engineering from UVa in 2016, and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from UVa in 2022. His research lines have focused on biomedical data analysis through signal processing and artificial intelligence techniques, mainly in the field of cerebral diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Schizophrenia. He is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB), looking for biomarkers on the TMS-EEG signals to characterize patients with schizophrenia.

Carolina Migliorelli

Carolina M. Migliorelli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1987. She received the Telecommunication Engineer Degree specializing in Electronic Systems from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2009. She holds a M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and UPC obtained in 2011. She received her Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 in the BIOART group. The topic of her Ph.D research was on the improvement of noninvasive localization of focal refractory epilepsy with magneotencephalography. Her main research interests are: the multimodal evaluation of pathologic and physiologic brain signals, the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy, the localization of brain sources, and the evaluation of brain networks.

Currently, she teaches subjects on Automatics and Digital Control at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona(ETSEIB).

Biography

Mislav

Mislav Jordanić received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. He joined the BIOART group in 2014, where he received his PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 (thesis title: " Muscular pattern based on multichannel surface EMG during voluntary contractions of the upper-limb").

His research interests include biomedical instrumentation, signal processing, and machine learning techniques with applications in human-machine interfaces, prostheses and assistive devices. Currently, he is working on motor tasks identification based on the high-density electromyography.
